Why Haiti?

Because we are called:

Back in 2013 in the aftermath of the 2010 earth quake and the 2012 hurricane Issac, SOHM, then partnered under another ministry, was asked to travel to Haiti to help introduce disability ministry to the Haitian churches and communities of Grande Goave.

Even before Tropical Storm Isaac and the 2010 earthquake the country and its people experienced daily devastation due to extreme poverty, widespread corruption, and spiritual starvation. The aftermath of the earthquake escalated the desperation to a catastrophic level. So we along with another ministry team and a load of donated wheelchairs went.

Through that initial trip we met Magnell, a remarkable believer born with polio, and his wife Mary. We quickly found a common bond of God's heart for people with disabilities and thus a call to carry that to the people of Haiti. Magnel's brothers, Maestro and Pastor Walner, shared the vision of ministry in the covert subculture of disability as well as Maestro's wife Elsie, and Miss Paulette.

Since then, we have seen God's providence in assembling a team that we could never have done ourselves. A perfectly imperfect combination of godly men and women. to carry out the calling of the Lord to care for the "least of these".

Motivated by gratitude for what God has done for us, and in seeking to do “what God has prepared for us to do" (Eph 2:10) SOHM established its own ministry in partnership with this team with a focused purpose of showing Christ's love. We carry His message of love and reconciliation to the people and families of Grand Goave, Haiti devastated by disability, poverty, and hopelessness.

Schools in Haiti do not allow students with disabilities to attend. SOHM's teacher adapts lessons and games for each student.

If students are unable to go to the school building, SOHM teacher visits them at their living space.
